Why the Sprint by Islands Trust to approve the Policy Statement Before the Election?

Stop Work on the Trust Policy Statement (TPS)

-Presentation by Mairead Boland, Saturna Island to the Trust Policy Programs Committee Feb. 11, 2022

  • TPS First Reading is slated for the June 21-23 Trust Council Meeting.

  • September 20-22 Trust Council meeting will fast track both the Second & Third Readings one month before the Oct. 15th Election. Where is the time set aside to contemplate Public Engagement?

  • Aggressive schedule to adopt the Trust Policy Statement – beginning less than 10 days from the end of the Public Engagement.

  • 10 days is hardly a decent interval to allow anyone to read and absorb the report and to update the Policy document accordingly.

Why are we spending $200K on this (public engagement) exercise?

Thankfully a motion was carried that the Public Engagement outcomes should dictate the TPS schedule. HOWEVER, watch this space - we need to hold them to that

Our coalition agrees with Mairead that the Islands Trust should stop the sprint towards approval of the radical policy before the election. Instead, we recommend they study the Management & Governance Review report, fix their internal dysfunction, then integrate the Feedback from Public Engagement.
